APVMA cancels DCPA (Dacthal, Chlorthal-Dimethyl) registration – safe disposal through ChemClear now available

Published: 10-10-2024

In a critical update for the agricultural industry, the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has cancelled the registration of all products containing dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate (DCPA, also known as Dacthal), effective immediately. This decision follows a recent review by the APVMA, initiated after the US-EPA’s findings in August, and was executed under Section 35A of the AgVet Code due to the chemical posing an imminent risk to persons, in this case ag workers and handlers. Importantly, there is no risk to consumers from produce which has been treated according to label directions. This is the first instance of a cancellation under Section 35A since its introduction to the Code in 2014.

All uses of DCPA are now banned, and it is now illegal to use the product. Retailers and farmers are urged to stop selling or using the chemical immediately and ensure its safe disposal.

Safe disposal through ChemClear

Agsafe, which operates the ChemClear program, is urging all individuals and businesses holding stock of DCPA to register it with ChemClear for safe disposal. ChemClear is Australia’s national product stewardship program for the collection and disposal of unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals.

How ChemClear works:

  • National collection program: ChemClear conducts state-wide collection runs across every state and territory in Australia every 2-3 years. This ensures agricultural chemical users have regular opportunities to safely dispose of unused or unwanted chemicals.
  • Permanent collection points: For those requiring more immediate disposal options, permanent collection facilities are available year-round in Sydney and Melbourne. These locations offer a convenient solution for businesses and users in these regions.
  • Free disposal for Group 1 chemicals: Certain brands of DCPA are classified as Group 1 chemicals under ChemClear, meaning they qualify for free collection and disposal.
